Back to school planning can either be fun or a dreaded task. As parents, we want to do what is best for our children and we want our homeschool to run efficiently and effectively. Sometimes we get bogged down in the details and forget to ask the most important participants what their thoughts are about the first day of school.

So I asked my teenage daughter what would make her first day back to homeschool special? Here are her thoughts on the subject. Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again. Sales are going on, summer is ending, and it’s time to start planning for the new school year. Let’s face it—sometimes this annual routine gets pretty old, and most of the time the first day back to school is dreaded by you and the students. Well, dread no more! Here are five tips for a stress-free and absolutely fun first day back to homeschool.

Serve Up a Special Breakfast

Let’s face the truth: the whole day is set by the start of the day. You don’t want day one to be a bad day, so why not give it a good start? This could be as simple as scrambling some eggs or if you’re not an early bird, celebrating with donuts.

Keep Day One Light

Don’t throw the schedule on your student’s desk and leave them to get the work done. Keep day one light, maybe even week one light, to help the students adjust to the new schedule. And this is coming from me, a high school homeschool student. Trust me, you’re not the only one stressing over day one.

Have a Schedule Made Prior to Day One

Don’t wait until the first day back and wing it. For me, I like to have everything on paper or else, I freak out. And a lot of other students are the same way. If you’re feeling confident and prepared, we’ll be confident and prepared. It helps you and the student a lot when you have the school day mapped out in front of you.

If you’re feeling confident and prepared, we’ll be confident and prepared.

Communicate With the Kids

Young or old, your students’ thoughts do matter. Before the day starts (maybe even while you’re eating that special breakfast), sit down with them and take time to connect. Ask questions like “what are your favorite subjects?” “How was last year?” And for older students, you can ask what their goals may be. Plus, at the end of the day, ask about their feelings on the new schedule. It makes the students feel more confident about the year and will surprisingly make the year go smoother.

A Back to School Party

Whether this be the family going to get ice cream the night before, a one-on-one mom and student date, or having a few friends over, celebrate the eve of day one! Don’t dread it.

Well, if you take anything away from this blog post, take away this: it’s all in the attitude.

You can either dread day one or celebrate day one. And most of the time, when Mom celebrates day one, so do the kids.

So approach back to homeschool with confidence, because it’s going to be a great year.
