How old do you think is too old to start over in life?
Is there a certain age or phase in life where you are just supposed to accept the way things are and coast on? I surely hope not!
I really struggled with this question this year. I turned 45 and felt like half my life is over. I felt stuck in my job. I was making really good money, but absolutely hated it. We are still paying off debt accumulated from a failed business venture and a layoff. Our savings were about gone accept for some college savings for our 4 daughters and the little retirement in our 401Ks we had saved.
I come from a family where my dad was in the same job and worked for the same employer for 30 years and had a nice lump sum retirement and pension by the time he retired. He expects me to have the same. But that’s not the world we live in. No one hardly stays at the same job anymore and I don’t know of any companies that offer employee pensions anymore!
So if we feel hopeless and stuck, how can we start over in life? Are you too old? Do others expect you to stay where you are because it’s what you went to school for?
It’s Never Too Late to Start Over in Life
The story in the Bible in John chapter 5 comes to mind when I think about my fear of starting over. I want it so bad, just like the crippled man on his mat, but fear and excuses stop me.
The man in the story had been laying by a pool that was known to heal when the angel came and stirred the waters occasionally. Everytime the angel came he tried to get to the water but never made it in time for healing. He had been there over 30 years!
Jesus came by one day and in John 5:6 it says this:
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”John 5:6
Are you making excuses or limiting yourself because of past mistakes? I know I have been and I’m ready to stop making the same excuses and create a life I love.
